Models with front-wheel drive get three rows, while all-wheel-drive models get two rows standard, with the third row available.
The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan employs a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that’s good for a respectable 184 horses and 221 lb-ft of torque, matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The engine features a start-stop system to boost fuel efficiency. EPA-estimated fuel economy for the 2021 Tiguan checks in at 23 mpg city/29 mpg highway for front-wheel-drive models.* With all-wheel drive, the Tiguan gets 21 mpg city/27 mpg highway.

The base VW Tiguan S trim comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, halogen headlights, LED taillights, LED daytime running lights, manually adjustable cloth front seats, power-adjustable and heated side mirrors, roof rails, cruise control, and a trailer hitch receiver. Standard technology features include a 6.5-inch infotainment touchscreen Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, the VW Car-Net mobile app, and a USB port.
The Tiguan also comes with a wide array of active safety features, including pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, a rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and forward collision warning. The Tiguan’s standard Intelligent Crash Response System keeps the driver and passenger safe during certain collisions. The system will shut down the fuel pump, turn on the hazard lights, and unlock the doors.
The top-spec VW Tiguan SEL Premium R-Line trim gets standard features that include all-wheel drive, 20-inch wheels, leather seats, ambient lighting, LED headlights, automatic high beams, driver-seat memory settings, a power-adjustable passenger seat, a hands-free tailgate, a 360-degree surround-view parking camera system, and a nine-speaker Fender audio system.
